A World of Dolphins!
What is the first animal that comes to your mind when you think about marine animals?
Dolphins are the first animals to come to my mind because they are one of the marine animals that are friendly to humans. Before I knew more about them, I had pegged them as the fun and friendly creatures of the sea.
They are definitely fun and friendly, but there are so many other things about them that most people don't know.
Dolphins are mammals. They need to breathe air through their blowhole, just like whales and porpoises.
There are around 40 species of dolphins. Some of the species are:
1. Spinner Dolphin
2. Orca
3. Striped Dolphin
4. Bottlenose Dolphin
There are so many more. Depending on the species, dolphins range in colour from white, pearl and pink to darker shades of brown, grey, blue and black.
Dolphins are wild animals, however, some dolphins are held in captivity. Bottlenose Dolphins are the most common species found in captivity. Captivity affects the dolphin's survival time. The average survival in captivity for all bottlenose dolphin individuals who lived more than 1 year is 12 years, 9 months and 8 days - much lower than in the wild where they live for between 30 and 50 years.
People often refer to them as "cuties", but baby bottlenose dolphins are called "calves". Male dolphins are called "bulls", females are called "cows" and a group is called a "pod".
Dolphins often look like they're smiling. However, they aren't. The dolphin's toothy grin masks its suffering and contributes to the myth that dolphins in theme parks enjoy a happy life.
However, dolphins don't have facial muscles, so even though we generally think they are smiling, they can't actually smile, even when they are having fun.
In the wild, to have fun and enjoy themselves, they are known to swim through self-made bubble rings and surf in the waves.
In conclusion, this was very informative and I learned a lot today, did you? Tell us in the comments.
Today was just the start of what's bound to come next for all of you, so make sure you have a look when it's published!
