Orcas, and Bottlenose Delights!
In the realm of enchanting and mesmerising marine animals. Dolphins are a ray of sunshine and joy!
They are known as the puppies of the ocean & we all love puppies, don't we? Like puppies, dolphins too have several breeds or in this case species.
Killer whales (Orcinus Orca) also called Orcas are actually part of the dolphin family. They are the family's largest members with a whopping 30 ft long body and a dorsal fin up to 6 feet.
Females have shorter and more curved dorsal fins than males. Each dorsal fin is unique for each orca!
It's used by several creatures to create an image of their environment. Since dolphins don't have vocal cords, They produce high-frequency clicks that bounce back from objects helping them visualise what the object in front is. This is mainly also used for communication and hunting.
These dolphins adapt to their environment quite easily. They are versatile creatures, they inhabit warm and temperate waters.
Killer whales like most dolphins live in pods, which usually contain 40 individuals each. However, the size of pods and diets vary depending on the location of the pod.
Another common thing that most dolphin species share is Echolocation.
As we have already established, Orcas are large creatures. So they require large amounts of food. On average Orcas eat 45-136 kilograms of food every day. However, this number does vary depending on their conditions.
The Orca is known as an apex predator, meaning it has a lot of marine animals on its menu. Some of them are as follows:
~ Penguins
~ Sea otters
~ Dolphins
~ Seals
~ Humpback whales (calves)
Orcas like most dolphins are known to hunt in pods. They have been known to be as small as 7 killer whales to 40 whales in one!
They're hunting tactics are ingenious. Oftentimes, they attack a school of fish and enclose them in a circle. Afterwards, they slam into them either killing the fish or giving them a shock for long enough so that they can eat them.
Subsequently, the lifespan of an average Orca in the wild is 50-90 years and Orca calves are known to be in the womb for about 15-18 months. Which is one of the longest among animals. The shocking thing is that Orcas only give birth to one baby every three to ten years. "Killer whales reproduce very slowly, so it's hard to recover their population," said famous ecologist John Durban. He made this discovery alongside his wife Holly Fearnbach.
Similarly, Bottlenose dolphins carry their babies for about 12 months. The reason for this extended period is that it allows the offspring to develop fully and shortly after its birth it can swim alongside its mother with ease.
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are easily recognizable by their distinct bottle-shaped snouts and curved mouths. Their sleek, streamlined bodies are perfectly adapted for life in the water, reaching lengths of up to 13 feet. Their skin is smooth and rubbery, often featuring a light grey colour on the upper side and a lighter shade on the belly.
Not only that but bottlenose dolphins are renowned for their remarkable intelligence, rivalling that of great apes. They exhibit problem-solving skills, tool use, and even cultural behaviours unique to specific groups. Their playful nature is evident in the acrobatic leaps, spins, and surfing on waves that they often display. Dolphins have been observed playing with seaweed, and shells.
Captive specimens have demonstrated the ability to recognize their reflections in several experiments, showing that they are aware of what they look like. That is something seen only in a few species of animals.
However, dolphins aren't only playful and sweet. They can be quite dangerous! When dolphins, like any animal, feel threatened, they attack, and a dolphin’s bite hurts more than a shark’s bite. That's because their teeth are blunt and not sharp like sharks. Which is why they bite you multiple times unlike a shark, who just chomps your arm off.
Dolphins are also much smarter than sharks, Most of the time, sharks don’t see the person they are attacking. Once they bite, they think we are seals because our skin tastes similar to a seal's. But a dolphin knows if it's a human or not. That is why if a dolphin bites you most of the time it is on purpose!
Furthermore, like orcas, they also have ingenious methods to hunt their prey. One of the most famous ones is dolphins making a mud ring around their prey and making those fish jump out of the water. Subsequently, they eat them.
Both these dolphins are more than just charming sea creatures. They represent the beauty of the ocean and how intricate and complex it really is. That's why they are fascinating to both scientists and admirers. We must preserve them and make sure no harm comes to them.
Until next time
