Dolphins - Dangers

We face a lot of dangers in our life, don't we?
Pollution, Climate Change, Global Warming, and so on.
Did you know that a dolphin also faces these things?
They are not only dangerous to humans, they are dangerous to any living being, plants or animals. They are dangerous even for the living things that live underwater.

Dolphins are harmed by a lot of things. Sharks, Fishermen, Land pollution, Noise pollution, Climate change and so on.

Climate Change

Climate Change can cause changes in the sea temperature, freshening of seawater, acidification rises in sea levels, the loss of icy polar habits and the decline of food sources.

It is impacting the lives of dolphins. The rapid warming of the planet is leading to the loss of habitat for dolphins. It is affecting the timing and the ranges of their migration, their distributions and even their ability to reproduce. Different types of dolphins prefer different temperatures, and due to climate change, there are fewer available habitats for these dolphins. Baby dolphins die at a young age, due to the changes in the temperature of the water. A lot of dolphins are harmed due to climate change.

Toxic Contamination

Oil, plastic, and other toxic substances are often thrown or spilt in oceans, seas, etc.
Once dolphins are surrounded by an oil slick, there is a risk that the toxic oil will enter their blowholes and mouths and that they will inhale volatile toxic chemicals evaporating from the surface of the oil. This can affect their lungs, immune function, and reproduction.

Dolphins can mistake plastic for common prey, like squids. They eat the plastic and get sick. This can kill many dolphins.

Pollution exposure can negatively impact dolphins in a variety of ways, including immune system suppression, reproductive issues, calf mortality, developmental abnormalities, cancer, pneumonia, skin infections, and other diseases.

Noise Pollution

Noise pollution can disrupt 'echolocation', the sensory ability of whales and dolphins to find food, socialize, and navigate underwater. In extreme cases, it can even cause physical harm, including temporary hearing loss.

All these things can impact the life of a dolphin heavily. It can kill so many innocent dolphins. But what can we do to prevent this? Read about it in our next blog!
