Time for Turtles!

What do you know about turtles?

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about turtles is that they are quite slow. 

While this is true, did you know they are quite fast in water? Oceanic turtles move awkwardly on land as their bodies are not built for speed, however, in water they move steadily along with strong, wing-like strokes of their huge flippers. 

Turtles can be huge. Moreover, there are many different types of them. 

Some of the different types of turtles are sea turtles, tortoises, pond turtles, and so on. Out of all of the types, only seven of them are species of marine turtles. 

Most turtles are brownish-grey, caramel-coloured, grey, tan or dark brown. However, some turtles are black, white, yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, olive green, shades of green, and pink. 

Turtles are reptiles, which means they breathe air and they lay eggs. They lay their eggs and then they leave them to fend for themselves. Turtles have evolved to do so as a survival strategy. However, they don't leave their eggs completely unprotected. They bury their eggs in the sand or soil. This protects the eggs from predators and harsh environmental conditions. 

                                      

Turtles can live almost anywhere. This is useful as they love to travel. 

Another interesting fact about turtles is that they are omnivores. Though they do prefer colorful food. However turtles don't have teeth to help them eat; instead, they have keratinous beaks with varying structures to accommodate their diets.

Turtles have some common characteristics with humans. They are capable of crying. They also hold their breath underwater. Sea turtles can hold their breath for a long time. They sleep underwater, and some turtles even hibernate underwater. 

To conclude, turtles are very interesting marine animals. There is so much about them that we have yet to discover.
